The short version
| Option | Best for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Wax / short-term sealant | Lower cost, easy refresh, added gloss | Shorter service life; needs more frequent renewal |
| Professional ceramic coating | Longer-term hydrophobic protection and easier maintenance | Higher cost and much more preparation |
Preparation is the biggest overlooked difference
A short-term protection product can often be added after a thorough wash and suitable decontamination. A long-term coating deserves more preparation because whatever is visible underneath will remain visible after the coating cures.
If the paint has swirl marks or haze that bothers you, consider paint correction before coating. Correction improves the appearance. Ceramic coating protects the prepared appearance.
What about Great Smokey’s 3–6 month protection?
Our short-term protection uses P&S Bead Maker-based protection. We intentionally call it a sealant/protection service rather than advertising it as a “ceramic coating.” It is a lower-commitment option for gloss, water behavior and easier routine maintenance.
When ceramic coating makes more sense
Choose ceramic when you plan to keep the vehicle, care about easier cleaning, want a longer service interval than short-term sealant and are willing to pay for proper surface preparation. It is especially logical after correction on paint you want to preserve.
What neither product does
Neither wax nor ceramic coating makes paint rock-chip proof. A coating is also not scratch-proof and does not remove existing defects. Physical film is a different protection category, and Great Smokey Detailing does not currently install paint protection film.
Cost
Short-term protection is less expensive because the preparation and product commitment are lower. Our professional ceramic coating service starts at $699, with final pricing based on vehicle size, paint condition, preparation and the coating system selected.
Not sure which one you need?
If the vehicle is already glossy and you simply want short-term protection, start there. If you want longer-term protection, send paint photos and we can discuss whether correction should happen before the coating.
